About

An Australian trombonist, right now I play with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and Ben Walsh’s Crusty Suitcase Band and lead or co-lead some bands like the Keijzer McGuiness Quintet, MyGoodness McGuiness, and the Techno Prisoners. Like most musicians, I play with a bunch of artists in diverse styles (King Tide, Shasha Marley, Pete Philly & Perquisite, The Herd, Geoff Bull’s New Orleans Band, Steve Hunter’s Nine Lives). I also sing, gesticulate and rock with the infamous, though often dormant, The Real Birdbrain, and occasionally write about music or speak about music in public.
Some gratuitous quotes:
“Lucian McGuiness makes blowin fine ‘bone look like a cakewalk.”
- at least according to Lloyd bradford (Brad) Syke
“And McGuiness trombone solos are such models of lyricism and balance that it sounded like the drum kit had never been invented; the human race had skipped hitting and gone straight to sliding. That’s obviously hyperbole, but you know what I mean. He has his own voice on his instrument.”
- Greg Levine on jazz.org.au
“…a trombonist, a man of multicoloured ‘hats’, a man who knows what the ear craves to hear. He too searches – and in doing so, succeeds. Coming from a musical family, Lucian seems to have picked up an integral ingredient to spice up life. Fortunately, for people who cross his path, you might notice a difference in them. A smile, or just a twinkle in their eye, as a by-product of tasting his cuisine.”
- Georgia Basist
