About

a trombonist, composer and bandleader.

I lead a few instrumental bands: the gratuitously entitled softjazz My Goodness, McGuiness! and the hardjazz Keijzer-McGuiness Quintet, the middlejazz Impermanent Quartet, gospel Salvation Street Shout, and a rip-roarer of a cabaret show called Little Egypt’s Burlesque Club. You can read more about these at the projects page. In 2012 I was commissioned to realise the Vintage Quartestra project by Sydney Festival. In 2011 I was a finalist in the APRA Professional Development Awards for emerging songwriters.

Aside from my own projects I work as trombonist for diverse range of musical projects in Australia and the Netherlands. Recently I’ve filled the trombone and jaw harp chair on Joanna Newsom’s 2010 and 2011 tours of Australia, arranged and recorded  horn parts for the 2011 album by UK songwriter Passenger, All The Little Lights, (currently topping pop charts across europe) and improvised brass parts for the charming children’s album by Australian songwriter Holly Throsby called, See!. I also toured with Dutch hip hop act Pete Philly and Perquisite´s major theater tours in 2008 and 2009.

In Australia I’ve been a regular trombonist for groups the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, the Crusty Suitcase Band, Orkestra of the Underground, and very occaisonally Mike Nock, Steve Hunter’s Nine Lives and King Tide.

He has his own voice on his instrument.”
